CASE STUDY / BPSE

Played on the court. Connected through the system.

BPSE’s tools connect the people involved in a tournament and in club life. Organisers run the competition, teams submit scores and spectators follow the standings. Court maps, calendars and rankings on the club website support the community between events as well.

01 / CONTEXT

The business challenge

On tournament day, organisers need a full overview, teams need quick score entry and spectators need readable standings. The same competition required different interfaces and permissions, including practical use on phones at the courts.

THE DESIGN DECISION

The competition is shared; the workspace changes with the role. Club content and the tournament application remain separately manageable within a connected public experience.

WORKFLOW / BPSE

How the user journey comes together.

  1. 01 / ORGANISER

    Set up the competition

Draws, teams and courts are managed through the organiser interface.

  2. 02 / TEAM

Submit a score from the court

The team code and QR score sheet lead to the appropriate mobile entry screen.

  3. 03 / SPECTATOR

    Follow the standings

Results and standings are available through the public spectator interface.

02 / IMPLEMENTATION

How we approached it

We built tournament management as a separate application beside the editable club website. Team codes and QR score sheets lead to the appropriate score-entry view. Sports information on the club site uses shared sources: venues feed both map and list views, while the event calendar combines spreadsheet sources.

Innovation in practice

The decisions behind the functionality

  • Different roles, one tournament

Organisers manage the event, teams submit their own results and spectators follow the relevant public standings.

  • From paper to the right mobile screen

QR score sheets and team codes provide direct entry points for on-site score submission.

  • One venue source, on the map and in the list

The same source drives map and list views; filtering and route links help visitors choose a venue.

  • Follow competitions from your own calendar

The event list is also available as a subscribable ICS feed, while server-side caching handles temporary upstream failures.

Behind the interface

Technologies and architecture

The club website runs on WordPress and Divi; the tournament system is a separate PHP/MySQL application with JavaScript interfaces. Court maps use Leaflet and OpenStreetMap. A cached server-side calendar proxy reads external sources and also provides a subscribable calendar feed.

WordPress + Divi

An editable club website, community content and embedded sports tools.

PHP + MySQL

Server-side operations and persistent tournament data for the separate competition application.

JavaScript

Organiser, team and spectator interactions, standings and calendar views.

Leaflet + OpenStreetMap

A browsable court map, venue list and map details.

jsPDF + QR-kódok

Printable score sheets and direct access to the team interface.

DELIVERY / PROJECT SCOPE

What we built

  • Organiser tools for tournaments, draws and court allocation
  • Mobile score submission using team codes
  • Spectator results, standings and printable QR score sheets
  • Court maps and venue lists built from shared data
  • A filterable event calendar and subscribable ICS feed
  • Official and aggregate ranking views based on spreadsheet sources

Our role

Development of the club website and separate tournament system, role-specific views, and printable and mobile tools. Connecting court maps, calendars and ranking views with available community and sports data.

Project status

The club website and tournament application are public; the portfolio screenshot shows the club site. Calendar and ranking views rely on their identified external sports data sources, while court information connects to community venue descriptions.
